Dr. Wei Zhang is a Professor/doctoral supervisor of South China Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received his Bachelor degree in Geography from Henan University in 1997, and his Doctor degree in Ecology from University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2008. Subsequently he joined South China Botanical Garden, CAS as an assistant scientist. He was a visiting scholar of Oklahoma University, USA from 2012 to 2013.
His research focuses on the Global Change Ecology, Forest Ecology and Environmental Science. Specific current research includes carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus biogeochemical processes, soil carbon sequestration and greenhouse gases fluxes (CO2, CH4 and N2O) from forests. He had found the phased response of soil carbon emission to atmospheric nitrogen deposition in subtropical forests of South China, and discussed the potential regulatory mechanisms. He revealed that the conventional experiments with understory addition of nitrogen largely neglect canopy-associated biota and processes, and therefore would not realistically simulate atmospheric nitrogen deposition to generate reliable impacts on forest ecosystems. He has completed more than 10 projects, such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China (4 projects), National Key R&D Program of China (sub-project), and Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province. He has published more than 90 peer-reviewed papers, including 23 papers as leading or corresponding author (including co-author), in the high ranked international journals, such as Nature Geoscience, Soil Biology and Biochemistry, Biogeosciences, Forest Ecology and Management, Ecosystems, etc. Prof. Zhang was listed in the First Prize of Nature Science Achievement Award of Guangdong Province in 2016 (6/14), and Ten Scientific Advances in Nitrogen Cycle in 2023 (by Soil Society of China, 3/3).
