3rd Cross-Strait Forest Dynamic Plot Symposium Held in Dinghushan

Date: Nov 28, 2009

The 3rd cross-strait forest dynamic plot symposium was held in Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve from 19th to 21st November, 2009. This symposium was co-organized by South China Botanical Garden (SCBG) of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Institute of Botany of Chinese Academy of Sciences. 55 delegates from 13 research academies, institutes and universities of cross-strait attended in this meeting. 19 delegates made oral presentation on ecological research. During the field trip, delegates showed great interest in the building and long-term tree-census techniques in the Dinghushan 20-ha plot.

This symposium is a regular symposia organized by Biodiversity Committee and is a network of forest research plots committed to the study of tropical and temperate forest function and diversity. The multi-institutional network comprises more than ten forest research plots in China. Common plot structure and scientific methodology unify the network. In each plot, which is typically 20 to 25 hectares, all free-standing trees with a diameter at breast height of at least 1 cm are tagged, measured, identified to species, and recensused approximately every five years.
