Expert from University of Gottingen visits South China Botanical Garden

Prof. Dirk Holscher, director of Faculty of Tropical Forest Ecology and Silviculture in University of Gottingen, Germany visited South China Botanical Garden (SCBG) from March 4 to 10, 2009, under the invitation of Prof. ZHAO Ping of ecophysiology research group. Prof. Holscher was given a warm welcome from Prof. Zhao Ping, XIA Nianhe, XING Fuwu and their groups during his visit.

During March 5-7, Prof. Holscher made a survey on the bamboo gardens of SCBG, Nankun Mountain and Guangning county, respectively. Experimental research sites are suggested to be established the bamboo gardens of SCBG and Nankun Mountain.

On March 10, Prof. Holscher made a presentation named as Water use characteristics in trees and bamboo in reforestation and agroforestry stands, which emphasized the difference of water usage between bamboo and common trees in eastern Asia. He also explored the cooperation with SCBG's colleagues on the research of water usage of bamboo ecosystem in the future.

Prof. Holscher's visit to SCBG deepens the communication and cooperation between SCBG's scientiests and foreign pertinent researchers, and provides the opportunity to study the advanced technology on the ecophysiology.
