A New Rice Cytoplasmic Male Sterile Line “Yuang A” Identified in SCBG
A new rice cytoplasmic male sterile line "Yuan A" bred by South China Botanical Garden (SCBG), Chinese Academy of Sciences, passed the technical appraisement under the direction of the Seed Administration of Guangdong Province on October 24, 2010. The rice experts from Guangdong Science and Technology Department, Rice Institute of Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, South China Agricultural University, Zhongkai University of Agriculture and Engineering, and Zhaoqing Institute of Agricultural Sciences, examined the field of "Yuan A", checked the rate of the self-pollinated seed setting and the pollen fertility. The experts also debriefed the breeding of "Yuan A" presented by Dr ZHANG Mingyong of SCBG and reviewed the report on "Yuan A". Finally, all experts considered the new sterile rice line "Yuan A" have achieved the standards of the rice cytoplasmic male sterile line for hybrid rice, and they approved the "Yuan A" can be used to produce the hybrid rice for farmers and breeders.
"Yuan A" is a new sterile line with high grain quality and it took about 7 years for breeding in SCBG. The genetic characteristics have been stable; its pollen infertility is 100% and it belongs to the typical abortive pollen. "Yuan A" has a good combining ability. A new hybrid rice "Yuanyou 7148" has been bred from "Yuan A", and this combination has passed the first region trail of the new rice variety in Guangdong Province.
